Nevsky Prospekt is a good place to start; this three-mile thoroughfare is the cultural heart of the city and has an array of attractions including the imposing Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan inspired by Rome’s St Peter’s Basilica. There are also numerous bars, cafes and restaurants offering everything from authentic Russian dishes to international fine dining.
There are museums in abundance here but if time is limited the State Heritage Museum, situated close to Palace Square, is recommended. Set in the visually spectacular Winter Palace and adjoining buildings, there are over three million items in this impressive collection including works by Picasso and Rembrandt.
The State Russian Museum, opened in 1898, is another must-see, housing everything from works by influential Russian painter Kandinsky to priceless religious artefacts. And, no trip is complete without spending time at the spectacular gold-domed St Isaac’s Cathedral with its stunning gardens fine collection of 19th-century art.
As the sun sets this city of grandeur takes on an almost fairy-tale quality with buildings such as the iconic onion-domed Church of Our Saviour of the Spilled Blood enchantingly lit. An evening at Mariinksy Theatre, renowned for its world-class ballet and opera performances, is not to be missed.
Road trips from St PetersburgNowhere can you see more evidence that Russia is a vibrant country with a rich culture and historic past than St Petersburg.
Just over an hour’s drive from central St Petersburg via the Ring Road and Ropshinskoe Highway is Peterhof. This delightful town on the outskirts of the city is famous for Peterhof Palace, a collection of palaces and gardens often referred to as the “Russian Versailles” and the brainchild of Peter the Great. The Grand Palace is the most ornate with its detailed stonework, gold embellishments and manicured lawns. The interiors are even more lavish with a dazzling ballroom and numerous chandeliered sitting rooms.
Travel for an hour south via the Western Rapid Diameter (ZSD) toll motorway to visit Pushkin, a town in the Pushkinsky district of St Petersburg. Another gem, it has many attractions, the most popular of which is the Alexander Pushkin Museum and Memorial Apartment dedicated to the famous Russian literary figure who lived here between 1836 and 1837. The re-created Baroque Amber Room at the 18th century Catherine Palace is another top attraction.
Drive for around an hour and 15 minutes, via the Western Diameter (ZSD) toll motorway, to reach Pavlosvsk. Featuring the youngest of the grand imperial estates which pepper the outskirts of St Petersburg it was named in honour of Tsar Pavel. This fine neo-classical park and gardens offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city and features winding streams, pavilions and bridges.
